JAWS Power Tip: How To Read Formulas in Excel with JAWS

Formulas determine how values are calculated in Excel. When navigating to a cell containing a calculation, JAWS will speak the calculation result and let you know a formula is present.

JAWS can also read the formula, which helps ensure accuracy, especially when checking for errors or verifying results. Reading formulas is also important when auditing someone else’s spreadsheet, since it allows you to confirm that calculations are logical and correct.

It can also help you learn Excel syntax by hearing how formulas are structured, and makes troubleshooting easier when results don’t look right.

To read the formula in the current cell:

1.) Press JAWS Key+CTRL+F2. (the JAWS Key is usually INSERT if you are using Desktop keyboard layout, or CAPS LOCK if you are using Laptop keyboard layout).

2.) This command announces the formula in the cell, not just the calculated value.

3.) Press JAWS Key+CTRL+F2 twice quickly to display the formula in the JAWS Virtual Viewer, where you can review the formula in detail using your arrow keys and reading commands.

4.) Press ESC to exit the Virtual Viewer and return to your spreadsheet.
